Punakha

The medieval capital of Bhutan; Punakha, was where the nation was formed and to this day where some of the most important national events are hosted. Even though it is in the North-Western Part of Bhutan the altitude is relatively low at an altitude of just 1242 meters above sea level where the famous Punakha Dzong is located. It is also here that the PhoChu (male river ) joins with the MoChu( female river) to form the glorious Punatsangchu.

Punakha still functions as the winter capital of the Central Monastic Body.
